Saskatchewan publisher says the demise of indie bookstores is hurting Canada’s publishing industry

After 45 years in business Coteau Books has closed its doors. The long-time Saskatchewan publisher is now entering into bankruptcy protection. Its four staff members were laid off on February 7. Joanne Skidmore, former President of Thunder Creek Publishing Co-operative Limited, which operated as Coteau Books, recently told Regina Leader-Post reporter, Lynn Giesbrecht, that the demise of independent bookstores, which Skidmore says are crucial to the survival of Canadian literature, is just one of the difficulties Coteau faced as it struggled to remain in business.
